Description for The Historic Lodge
This is it, Folks! See the stories in the Coastal Living, Jacksonville magazine and Gainesville magazines here! This 110-year-old cottage is located 50 steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Five bedrooms, a great room with fireplace, two bathrooms - one with an original claw-footed tub - large family kitchen, pantry, laundry, dining porch and wrap-around porch... In a treasure of Florida history, The Lodge has been listed as eligible for registration on the National Registry of Historic Places by the federal government. So come vacation in a treasure of Summer Haven history!
Send your thanks back in time. Your stay at The Lodge, a 19th-century beach cottage 15 miles south of gorgeous St. Augustine, promises a historic and redefining simplicity. A few days here means renewed sense of ‘the important things in life’, chock-full of familial magic. Tucked on a sleepy cul de sac next to the Atlantic Ocean, The Lodge and its older sister The Hut are elegant and understated reminders of a far-away time.
An area known as Summer Haven was recommended to stressed Pennsylvania banking businessman, Thomas Mellon, for its restorative powers. Construction on first The Hut and then The Lodge began in the 1880s, at a time when Chester Arthur was president and Mark Twain was busy finishing his Adventures of Huck Finn. This is seriously good quality time, where simple, beautiful touches - candle light and ocean breezes - complete the set.
A house with this much history begs for a multi-generational vacation where the stories come out - as family folklore enjoys another airing. Take the time on this holiday to hear the stories you’d never otherwise have a chance to hear. Reconnect with grown cousins or childhood friends - covering more ground than you ever would in a hasty holiday card.
Whip up beloved family meals - packing your grandmother’s handwritten recipes for a birthday cake made from scratch. Snap dozens of photos as Grandpa teaches the next generation to fish. Try this more genuine of magic kingdoms for real family bonding, in surrounds so idyllic they look like a movie set. Adirondack chairs wait on the wrap-around porch, where palm trees dot the view of stone breakers just beyond. Liberal touches of antiquity, such as the front porch’s restored pew bench, leave room to wonder what the walls would say - if they could talk.
Up to ten guests can comfortably stretch out over 1,200 square feet. Five double occupancy bedrooms, four queen beds, and two bunks share two bathrooms. An equipped kitchen, dining porch and a living area each honor the old with family heirloom accessories and new, comfy furniture appropriate to the period.
The house boasts recent refurbishment - yet maintains all original features. Solid pine floors and old glass windows. A claw-footed porcelain bathtub and a pyramid roof for extra air circulation. Instead of closets, enjoy simple wall hooks to keep your clothing organized - and relish in a vacation that requires only a parade of shorts, t-shirts, bathing suit and towel (repeat).
Past guests love the inclusive aspect their vacations can take, thanks to the home’s single-story plan. Older relatives who struggle with mobility will enjoy a property that has everything to hand. The ocean, just 100 feet away, can be seen, heard - and tasted- from within The Lodge itself.
Please Note: Due to hurricane erosion at the front, there is now an area of large boulders blocking the beach access points. Although you can walk in between these boulders to access the beach like the locals that live nearby, the nearest easy beach access is approximately one mile north of Fort Matanzas National Park. It has (free) paved parking and provides beach access via a meandering boardwalk.

Reviews for The Historic Lodge
My husband and I rented the house for a week. It was the most relaxing, chill week we have had in a long time. We absolutely loved sitting on the back porch every morning drinking our coffee and every evening watching the sunset drinking our cocktails. The breezes on the side porches where amazing. We ate every meal out on the side porch. You could hear and see the ocean. AMAZING!!!! It is truly a one of a kind rare find. If you are looking for complete beach and porch time this is the place for you. The dryer was not working when we got there. We put a call in they came out and checked it. Then the AMAZING Rachel she oversee's the property for the owner came over to check on us and to let us know a repair guy would be out to fix it. And boom it was fixed and running great. I do not have one bad thing to say we really enjoyed our week. We will definitely be back. I hope this gem is available for many years to come! One side note if you re looking for a luxury place you may want to get a condo(boo) it is an old house with amazing character. May not be for everyone but we found it to be paradise :-)
AWESOME!!!
We absolutely loved staying in this beautiful home yes it is a little dated needs some work on the screened porches, (but the history behind it) oh boy if those walls could talk!!! It was in a great location very close to the beach so when my grandson got tired we could be inside in a matter of a couple minutes.
It was very hot and the a/c in the main house had a hard time keeping it cool which is to be expected in a house built in the 1800's. My only complaint one would be that there was a home owner on the end of the street (he wasnt very nice to people visiting the area) was having some BIG rocks moved and basically blocked the only entrance onto the beach, we made do and made our way around them more of a nuisance being as when we rented the place it states there is an entrance to the beach without having to climb over the boulders. WE will definitely rent this again.
Lots of Charm
We really enjoyed our stay but the place is really old and needs repairs but it really is charming. Has a lot of history which was very interesting. I wish it had been a little closer to the beach it was a little hard for the older folks to go down the rock trail to the beach. First day we were their the air conditioner in the kitchen was not working properly and they replaced it with a new one the next day. Close to everything, but at the same time secluded. Would stay again but for the money I would want something right on the beach.
House with Character
House was functional, beautiful, and fit our needs well. Beach access and ocean breeze was heavenly. Some updating could be done (primarily dishwasher), but can't really complain about much else.
A Step Back in Time
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Lodge! I felt as though I had stepped back to a simpler place and time. I spent many happy hours reading on the porch. The house was quaint, clean and supplied with everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and the A/C kept the house at the perfect temperature. The kitchen was fully equipped and we enjoyed eating some meals on the screened-in porch. I miss the sound of the waves at night. I highly recommend The Lodge to anyone who wants a quiet, beautiful get away.
